Friends with Benefits is a 2011 American romantic comedy film directed by Will Gluck and starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. The film features Patricia Clarkson, Jenna Elfman, Bryan Greenberg, Nolan Gould, Richard Jenkins, and Woody Harrelson in supporting roles.[3] The plot revolves around Dylan Harper (Timberlake) and Jamie Rellis (Kunis), who meet in New York City, and naively believe adding sex to their friendship will not lead to complications. Over time, they begin to develop deep feelings for each other, only to deny it each time they are together.
Jamie meets Parker, an oncologist. After five dates, they consummate their relationship, only for him to break up with her in the morning. When Jamie's free-spirited mother, Lorna, abandons their Fourth of July weekend plans, Dylan persuades Jamie to travel with him to Los Angeles. There, she meets his sister Annie, nephew Sammy, and his father, who suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Though Jamie and Dylan assure his family that they are merely friends, they spend an intimate night together and have sex again.
Paramount Pictures dropped its original protest against the film after their director, Ivan Reitman, re-titled his film, No Strings Attached. Screen Gems then moved forward with the title Friends with Benefits. At the same time, NBC was developing a sitcom with the same title, but the movie production company stated that due to its production schedule, they didn't expect an issue to arise.[12] Screen Gems chose to accelerate production fearing that they would lose their title to the competing Paramount project. Director Will Gluck spoke about the frustration of comparing the two films, stating: \"I wish there was more space between them. The thing that's irking me now is people are saying we're remaking No Strings Attached. We're not remaking it. The two movies were being made at the same time.\"[13] Gluck, in an interview with The New Zealand Herald, said that both films are different.[14] Similar sentiments were expressed by Kunis, stating, \"It's just two different movies. There's only ... so many stories you can tell in the world. This is just one of the many.\"[15]
Will Gluck stated that the concept of the story began with the idea that he wanted to work with Kunis and Timberlake, explaining that he rewrote the script for the two actors. Following those changes, Gluck expressed that he wanted to attract a more adult audience and that he \"wanted to do more of an adult movie about sex, too, and about relationships\".[20] He went on to compare the storyline of Friends with Benefits to the relationship in films between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.[21]
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 68% based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.20/10. The site's critical consensus reads, \"Friends with Benefits adds nothing new to its well-worn rom-com formula, but the chemistry between Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis is almost enough to carry the movie by itself.\"[27] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 63 out of 100 based on 37 critics, indicating \"generally favorable reviews\".[28] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of \"B+\" on an A+ to F scale.[29]
Kunis's easy authority grounds the movie, while Timberlake tapdances delightfully around the edges. His voice and his manner are light, there's barely a hair on the guy's chest, yet his confidence and wit are sexy in a way entirely befitting a smart urban romance.
Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a New York head-hunter trying to sign Los Angeles-based Dylan (Justin Timberlake) for her client. When he takes the job and makes the move, they quickly become friends. Their friendship turns into a friendship with benefits, but with Jamie's emotionally damaged past and Dylan's history of being emotionally unavailable, they have to try to not fall for each other the way Hollywood romantic comedies dictate.
Justin Timberlake's character has a lightning-bolt tattoo, and Mila Kunis' character wears a lightning-bolt necklace throughout the movie except in the photo-shoot scene when they are angry with each other.
Ashton Kutcher who is in the movie No Strings Attached (2011) has a baby with and married Mila Kunis who stars in this movie. They attempted to originally have a \"no strings attached\" relationship, but eventually fell in love. Both movies have a very similar theme. Additionally, Justin Timberlake made a song and album called \"No Strings Attached\" with fellow band mates, NSYNC.
The song that Dylan makes fun of and refers to as an \"ambiguously upbeat pop song that has nothing to do with the plot\" at the end of the movie that him and Jamie watch together is called \"Hey Soul Sister\" by the band Train. They play the same song at the end of the film.
Mila Kunis revealed in an interview with Craig Ferguson that she went sky diving during production, which was against her contract since it risked grievous bodily harm while still filming. She only divulged this information after the movie's production was done and was set to release.
According to Match.com's Singles in America site, out of the 55% of singles who have had a friends-with-benefits relationship, 45% of them have had it evolved into a full-fledged relationship. Likewise, out of the 40% of singles who have had a \"hanging out\" relationship with someone, 29% have gotten into a relationship from it.
Parents need to know that this R-rated romcom stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as adult friends who decide to make their relationship sexual with no commitments (hence the \"benefits\" of the title). Consequently, there's plenty of frank, direct sexual talk and content, with partial nudity, simulated sex acts, innuendoes, and free-wheeling discussions about sexual preferences and relationships. There's also social drinking and swearing (including \"s--t\" and \"f--k\"). It's adult fare, but it does ultimately have positive messages about true love.
Hard-driving executive recruiter Jamie (Mila Kunis) successfully persuades up-and-coming art director Dylan (Justin Timberlake) to take a job offer from GQ magazine and move to New York from California. Before long, they've become good friends, watching (and deriding) romantic comedies, exploring the city, and getting to know each other. They've each just extricated themselves from a hilariously dysfunctional relationship and aren't eager to jump into new ones. One problem: They miss sex. Hence the agreement to be each other's commitment-free \"friend with benefits.\" The arrangement works like a charm ... until it doesn't. Can their friendship survive the complications that romantic feelings bring, or should they be friends no more
Still, Friends with Benefits is surprisingly entertaining, thanks in part to Kunis -- who combines comedic chops with gorgeous-but-approachable looks and a winning personality -- and a parade of gifted supporting actors (Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, and the always tip-top Patricia Clarkson and Richard Jenkins) who can do no wrong. Timberlake manages to stay above water; sometimes, he's even persuasively charming. Yet you have to wonder what this movie could have been had it not given into the expected outcome, coming up instead with an ending that would still be satisfying but bold and -- dare we say it -- more realistic. No such luck.
Families can talk about the idea of a \"friends with benefits\" relationship. What messages does that kind of arrangement convey about love and commitment Parents, talk to your teens about your own values when it comes to dating and relationships.
